Save the Date in Siena, Italy

I was asked by a client to create and design ten different save the dates for her birthday week  taking place at the Palio horse races in Siena, Italy.  Il Palio held twice a year, features ten horses and their riders (riding bareback) dressed in their specific colors representing ten of the seventeen city wards. The Pailo held in August is in honor of the Assumption of Mary.  It was definitely going to be a challenge to create something so special while featuring these elaborate flags for the save the date. But in a collaboration with a good family friend and talented artist, Michael Rieder, we worked together to create something truly original and special. These will be keepsake for sure. Painting is done with watercolor.

I wanted to make the packaging equally as special and organic, so I decided to create small parcels that each of the guests would receive. I took empty shirt boxes and covered them in brown craft paper, hand writing each address on each box, and wrapped them with red and white bakers string, tied with an olive branch.

I tagged each parcel with a handwritten travel tag in gold. Some say "Avventura vi aspetta" which in Italian means "Adventure Awaits" and "Saluti" which translates to "Greetings.'

How darling are these flea market tags from Paper Source? Used with gold watercolor and straight pen.
